Cristina Garcia Coronado is the visionary founder of Mexfolk A cultrual initiative dedicated to promoting Mexican heritage through dance, art, and storytelling. Cristina migrated from Mexico to Arizona in 1988, bringing with her a rich background in traditional Mexican dance. As a dancer in México, she performed with the University of Sonora and trained under esteemed instructors like Rosendo Solórzano, Jesus Noriega, Mario Gaviña, Xicotencatl Diaz De Leon, and Silvia Lozano, this last one internationally recognized as cultural ambassador for Mexico.
Despite facing limited resources in her new home, Cristina was determined to share her cultural heritage. At a time where there were no stores in Arizona selling traditional Mexican dresses, she crafted costumes herself using a sewing machine. She invested all her personal funds into purchasing costumes, shoes, and accessories to ensure her dancers looked best on stage. This dedication aimed to educate audiences and empower dancers.
Cristina's journey of cultural promotion began with the founding of Ballet Folklorico Mexfolk in 1990, focusing on children's performances. She expanded her efforts with Ballet Folklorico Fandango for youth in 2000, and Ballet Folklorico Magia y Folklore for all ages in 2020. Through these groups, Cristina tirelesly donated her time to promote Mexican culture at churches, schools, and public and private events. Her efforts were particularly significant at a time when there were fewer promoters of Mexican culture than there are today.
